Switch to Linux Reason #24: Keep your photos outside a provider's automatic upload flow

Family photographs carry locations, faces, and a timeline of private life.

Why this matters now

Family photographs carry locations, faces, and a timeline of private life. Automatic upload should be a conscious backup choice, not a hidden consequence of signing in. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path (Windows Backup documentation).

What changes with Linux

Linux photo folders stay local unless you configure a sync application. You can still create encrypted or self-hosted backups without exposing every image to one vendor. Nextcloud documents file access, synchronization, sharing, versioning, and ownership transfer for servers users can choose. Self-hosting adds administration responsibility but makes the storage provider a choice (Nextcloud files and synchronization). Ubuntu documents LUKS-based full-disk encryption and passphrase-based unlocking. Encryption protects data at rest on a lost device when configured correctly; it does not protect an unlocked session or online account (Ubuntu full-disk encryption).

Make the move

Export originals, preserve metadata, and verify counts before changing systems. Decide whether any cloud copy is necessary, and keep a separate offline backup.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
