## Why this matters now

Backup is essential, but a convenience prompt can hide who holds the copy, how recovery works, and what happens when the account is unavailable. Microsoft's Windows Backup workflow starts with a Microsoft account and stores backed-up information with that account. A convenient backup should be weighed against who controls the destination and recovery path ([Windows Backup documentation](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/backup-recovery/back-up-and-restore-with-windows-backup)).

## What changes with Linux

On Linux, choose an external drive, a server you control, or a provider you trust. The backup destination and encryption method are separate decisions. Nextcloud documents file access, synchronization, sharing, versioning, and ownership transfer for servers users can choose. Self-hosting adds administration responsibility but makes the storage provider a choice ([Nextcloud files and synchronization](https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/user_manual/en/files/)). Ubuntu documents LUKS-based full-disk encryption and passphrase-based unlocking. Encryption protects data at rest on a lost device when configured correctly; it does not protect an unlocked session or online account ([Ubuntu full-disk encryption](https://documentation.ubuntu.com/security/security-features/storage/encryption-full-disk/)).

## Make the move

Make a written inventory of irreplaceable files and test a restore. If using cloud storage, review encryption and account recovery before relying on it.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
