Switch to Linux Reason #2: Stop treating account sign-in as a condition of basic computing
An operating system should not make access to your own keyboard, files, and programs depend on an identity service.
Why this matters now
An operating system should not make access to your own keyboard, files, and programs depend on an identity service. If the account is locked or unavailable, the dependence becomes painfully clear. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account and internet connection for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, along with specific hardware requirements. These are vendor decisions about access to a general-purpose computer (Windows 11 specifications).
What changes with Linux
Local Linux accounts let the device authenticate you without contacting a vendor each time. Network services can remain separate, so a dispute with one provider need not disable ordinary work. Debian documents local user accounts, groups, privilege separation, and sudo. Those ordinary system controls let a person manage access without making a cloud identity the root of every desktop task (Debian authentication and access controls). Debian explains that software freedom concerns the ability to use, study, modify, and redistribute programs, not merely a zero-dollar price. These rights make an exit from a bad vendor relationship practical (Debian's explanation of free software).
Make the move
Inventory accounts tied to your current desktop and export what you need. Set up a local Linux login and verify you can open your work while offline.
A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
