## Why this matters now

A computer records patterns of work, interests, and relationships. Those patterns are valuable enough that collection should require a real purpose and a real choice. Microsoft documents the categories of optional Windows diagnostic data, including device and usage identifiers in relevant events. Optional collection can be controlled; the point is to understand the collection system before accepting its defaults ([Windows diagnostic data documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/privacy/optional-diagnostic-data)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux gives you a route to systems with inspectable code, local accounts, and removable services. It does not guarantee zero telemetry; the particular distribution and installed software decide that. Debian explains that software freedom concerns the ability to use, study, modify, and redistribute programs, not merely a zero-dollar price. These rights make an exit from a bad vendor relationship practical ([Debian's explanation of free software](https://www.debian.org/intro/free)). GNOME documents controls for location services, recent-file history, screen locking, and deletion of temporary files. These settings illustrate that private desktop behavior can be configured directly by the person using it ([GNOME privacy settings](https://help.gnome.org/gnome-help/privacy.html.en)).

## Make the move

Start by listing which services have access to usage data. Keep only what you need, and migrate sensitive daily work before another year of profiling accumulates.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
