## Why this matters now

Every unnecessary background process consumes resources and can create another path for data collection or attack. Users should not have to accept a vendor's whole product portfolio to edit a file. Microsoft documents the categories of optional Windows diagnostic data, including device and usage identifiers in relevant events. Optional collection can be controlled; the point is to understand the collection system before accepting its defaults ([Windows diagnostic data documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/privacy/optional-diagnostic-data)).

## What changes with Linux

Linux service management and package removal allow a leaner machine. The tradeoff is responsibility: removing the wrong service can break functionality, so changes should be deliberate. Debian describes a free operating system with a package manager and a large software archive. That provides a concrete route to getting essential tools without making one commercial store the gatekeeper ([About Debian](https://www.debian.org/intro/about)). Debian documents local user accounts, groups, privilege separation, and sudo. Those ordinary system controls let a person manage access without making a cloud identity the root of every desktop task ([Debian authentication and access controls](https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch04.en.html)).

## Make the move

Choose a well-supported distro, list active services, and remove optional ones one at a time. Keep a backup and document what you changed.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
