## Why this matters now

A household computer is where people draft letters, manage bills, and store photos. Requiring a vendor account at the door creates a durable link between that private activity and a corporate identity. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account and internet connection for initial setup of Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use, along with specific hardware requirements. These are vendor decisions about access to a general-purpose computer ([Windows 11 specifications](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-specifications)).

## What changes with Linux

A Linux distribution such as Debian can be installed and used with a local account. You can add online services individually when they deliver something you actually need. Debian documents local user accounts, groups, privilege separation, and sudo. Those ordinary system controls let a person manage access without making a cloud identity the root of every desktop task ([Debian authentication and access controls](https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch04.en.html)). Debian publicly commits to free software, open bug reporting, and putting users and the free-software community first. That is a governance commitment users can inspect rather than a promise hidden in marketing ([Debian Social Contract](https://www.debian.org/social_contract)).

## Make the move

Back up your files, test a live Linux session, and create a local user during installation. Keep recovery information yourself. Check whether your chosen distribution asks for optional online services.

A Linux installation does not erase data already collected or make every app private. Choose a maintained distribution, check its data practices, protect your accounts, and keep tested backups.
