**A Lightning purchase of digital research has three distinct steps: the seller issues an invoice, the payment system verifies settlement, and the seller delivers access to the promised material.** Paying an invoice does not, by itself, mean a PDF has arrived or that the browser has saved the credential needed to open it later.

On [CacheRat](https://cacherat.com/), an eligible document listing can offer an invoice-based purchase without requiring a public customer profile. The current purchasing system issues a Lightning payment request for a specific item; after payment is verified, the buyer must collect and save a private **64-character access secret** for that item. The secret is not a wallet recovery phrase, and it is different from a bulletin author's ownership credential.

The most useful rule is simple: **verify the item, pay the invoice once, confirm settlement, collect the access secret, and check the delivered resource before closing the browser.**

This article covers CacheRat's purchase-and-delivery boundary. For choosing and funding a wallet, see Switchboard's separate [Bitcoin Lightning beginner's guide](https://switchboardtechservices.com/guides/how-to-use-bitcoin-lightning-quickly-and-easily/).

## Verify the checkout refers to the right item

CacheRat's [current Index](https://cacherat.com/index/) describes purchases as access to a particular note's paid reveal, not a general store order. For example, a [live operator listing](https://cacherat.com/q90) offers an externally hosted PDF download. Before requesting its invoice, check three things together: **the exact listing URL, the offer displayed there, and the sat amount the current checkout quotes**. If the item or amount differs from what you intended to purchase, stop before confirming payment.

The listing is the record of *what* was offered; the invoice requests *payment*; verified settlement and the subsequently collected access secret enable *delivery*. None of those states is interchangeable. For a detailed decision about source quality, file format, rights, or whether the research is worth the price, use the [account-free research buyer's guide](https://switchboardtechservices.com/guides/buy-digital-research-without-a-public-profile/).

CacheRat's public Index also separates research reveals from ordinary bulletin board time. Buying document access is not the same transaction as paying for an announcement to appear on an active board.

## What happens between checkout and delivery?

It helps to see the stages independently.

| Stage | What happened | What has **not** happened yet |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Listing displayed** | You can read the public description and current price | No invoice has necessarily been issued |
| **Invoice issued** | The seller's payment system generated a specific Lightning request | The invoice is not yet evidence of payment |
| **Wallet paying or pending** | Your wallet has attempted the payment | The seller may not yet have verified settlement |
| **Payment settled and recognized** | CacheRat's payment system has confirmed an eligible receipt | The access secret may still need to be collected |
| **Secret collected and saved** | You now possess the credential used to unlock the purchased item | The external download itself may not yet be saved |
| **Resource checked and retained** | You have tested the promised access and saved a lawful copy if permitted | Neither third-party hosting nor future availability is guaranteed |

These stages are intentionally separate. CacheRat's current checkout logic associates an invoice with the particular item and purchase browser session, rather than accepting a user's claim that payment occurred. Payment receipts must be verified against the system's actual settlement records before access is granted.

The [BOLT 11 invoice standard](https://github.com/lightning/bolts/blob/master/11-payment-encoding.md) defines the Lightning payment request, including payment identity, optional amount and description, creation time, expiry, and other fields. An invoice string or QR code is a request to pay, **not a cryptographic proof that the merchant was paid**.

## A practical CacheRat checkout walkthrough

The specific button text and quoted price are determined by the current product page. Do not rely on an old screenshot or assume every CacheRat listing has a purchase option.

1. **Open the exact CacheRat document listing.** Read what the resource includes, its source attribution, expected format, and the price shown for that item. If the offer is incomplete or ambiguous, resolve that before sending money.
2. **Use that listing's own purchase or unlock control.** The page prepares a Lightning invoice tied to the item and current checkout session. Do not send bitcoin to an unrelated address or invoice obtained from a comment or unsolicited message.
3. **Review the invoice in your wallet.** CacheRat quotes the purchase amount in **satoshis (sats)**. A compatible wallet can scan its QR code, open a Lightning payment link, or use a copied invoice. Compare the decoded amount and description with the actual listing. A separate wallet routing fee may be shown.
4. **Confirm payment once.** Let the wallet finish or report its status. If the browser or wallet appears stuck, do not immediately press Pay again or generate a replacement invoice.
5. **Return to the same CacheRat browser session.** The site checks the invoice status. Keep that page and its essential session cookies available while collecting the credential.
6. **After verified settlement, collect the access secret.** The current system generates a separate 64-character credential for the purchase. Copy and securely store the actual secret with the item URL, then acknowledge that you saved it when prompted.
7. **Unlock and check the item.** Use the saved secret through the listing's **Unlock with Secret** control when needed. Follow any supplied document link, confirm that the correct resource opens, and retain a permitted copy with its citation details.

You should finish with **two different kinds of evidence**: a wallet payment record showing what you paid, and the private access secret or delivered file showing what the purchase made available. Neither replaces the other.

## Invoice, payment reference, and access secret are different

These strings can all be long and technical-looking, but they have separate purposes.

**Lightning invoice:** A signed payment request, usually encoded as a long BOLT 11 string or QR image. It represents an amount, payment conditions, and an expiration time. It is not an account password.

**Wallet payment record:** Your wallet's evidence that it sent or completed a payment. Depending on the wallet, it may display a timestamp, payment hash, preimage, fee, or status. This is useful when asking the merchant to investigate settlement.

**CacheRat purchase access secret:** A randomly generated 64-character credential issued only after the seller has verified the eligible payment. It authorizes access to that purchase's available content and must be kept private. It is not the same as the invoice string, a public URL, or the secret used to edit a bulletin.

**Wallet backup or recovery material:** Sensitive credentials that protect your money. They are completely outside the product-delivery process. CacheRat support does not need your wallet seed phrase, private keys, or purchased-item access secret to investigate a failed payment.

Keeping these categories straight is important when a checkout stalls. Sending the wrong string to a third party can expose access or create security risks without helping reconcile a payment.

## Why “payment sent” and “payment verified” may differ

Lightning normally settles successful payments quickly, but interfaces and networks can fail independently.

A wallet can show an attempted payment while the route ultimately fails. A browser can lose its connection after the payment is settled. A merchant-side service can be delayed in learning that an invoice was paid. An invoice can expire while an earlier payment is still being reconciled.

[Core Lightning's payment documentation](https://docs.corelightning.org/docs/sending-and-receiving-payments) describes how an invoice is generated and decoded, then paid using the Lightning system. Its [invoice reference](https://docs.corelightning.org/reference/invoice) records expiry details separately from invoice creation and settlement. The protocol's success state is not identical to a particular checkout page displaying “success.”

CacheRat's purchase implementation tracks invoice creation, pending requests, confirmed payments, expired or failed attempts, and cases requiring further review. Access is granted only after its verified settlement checks pass. That design avoids treating a screenshot or manually entered receipt ID as sufficient proof.

**Do not assume a page refresh cancels an invoice or a slow page means your payment failed.** Verify the original request before making another attempt.

## What if the Lightning invoice expires?

An invoice has a specified validity period. If you have **not** paid it and the checkout says it has expired, you can normally request a new invoice through the actual item page.

But if you attempted payment close to the expiry, or your wallet shows success and CacheRat still displays an expired or pending invoice, **check the existing payment status first**. The current checkout explicitly cautions that an earlier invoice may still require reconciliation and tries to avoid collecting payment twice.

A sound troubleshooting sequence is:

1. Check your wallet's exact result for the original invoice: **completed, failed, or still pending**.
2. Reopen or reload the original CacheRat listing and use its **Check payment status** option if present.
3. Give the payment system the opportunity to recognize a legitimate receipt; avoid repeatedly submitting payment.
4. Only create a new invoice if the original is confirmed unpaid or failed, and the page permits a new request.
5. If the states conflict, preserve the transaction details and contact support rather than guessing.

A failed payment may never have left your wallet. An apparently successful payment can require merchant-side investigation if it has not been credited. The difference determines the next step.

## What if the payment settled but nothing unlocks?

Separate **not credited** from **not delivered**.

If CacheRat has not recognized the settled payment, the problem is settlement reconciliation. Retain the invoice details, the wallet's success record, the listing URL, and the approximate time. If the checkout flags a receipt for review or says the payment could not be credited, contact the site rather than paying another invoice.

If CacheRat shows **payment confirmed** but the credential has not been saved, the next action is to **collect the purchase secret in the original browser**. The documented collection period is **24 hours after verified settlement**. When the secret is first displayed, temporary encrypted retry delivery lasts at most **one hour**, within that overall 24-hour limit, and ends sooner once the buyer acknowledges saving the secret.

Those are **delivery windows for the credential, not an expiration date for a properly saved credential**. They are not a promise that an access secret can be recovered after the window closes. Keep the checkout session intact until collection is complete. Do not clear cookies or close an unresolved purchase simply because your wallet reports success.

If the secret was saved but the document link is broken, you have a **fulfillment or third-party source problem**, not necessarily a failed Lightning payment. Report the actual URL and observed error without publicly exposing the secret.

## What if I lose the access secret?

CacheRat's current buyer-access flow does not describe an ordinary password-reset or lost-secret recovery process. Each item-specific secret is distinct from the publishing owner's note secret.

If you lose it, first check your private password manager or saved purchase record. A wallet receipt does not automatically reconstruct the secret; it proves payment from the wallet's perspective, not possession of the issued access credential.

If you believe payment settled but you never received the credential, contact CacheRat promptly with the **listing URL, approximate settlement time, amount in sats, wallet payment reference, and a description of the problem**. Do not include a wallet seed phrase, private key, or an access secret you still possess.

For source material that has already been lawfully downloaded, keep your own permitted file copy. CacheRat's [current Index](https://cacherat.com/index/) cautions that external downloads have their own availability and usage rights. A saved access secret can authorize the available reveal; it cannot guarantee that an outside PDF server will keep hosting the file.

## Payment does not guarantee a particular external file stays online

A CacheRat research product may supply a file, a research document, an indexed collection, or a list of verified links. A purchase grants whatever access the actual listing and applicable terms promise; it does not turn outside archives into permanent infrastructure.

The current system can recognize a purchase even after an ordinary bulletin has left active category listings. But access still depends on the item remaining available under the site's rules and any outside resource still being reachable. Site removal, a disabled offering, or an external host change can affect a later download.

That is why a completed buyer workflow includes **opening the resource and retaining a lawful copy**, not merely collecting an invoice receipt.

A purchased link also does not give the buyer ownership, resale rights, or permission to republish the original author's work. The [current CacheRat Index](https://cacherat.com/index/) describes a reveal purchase as access to that note's protected information, not transfer of editing rights or broader ownership; any copyright or reuse permissions must be established separately.

## An illustrative transaction ledger

Suppose you buy access to a researched historical-document source list. This is a **hypothetical example**, not a claim about a specific CacheRat listing or its price.

| Record | Example entry |
| --- | --- |
| Product | “Annotated source list for an obsolete computer manual” |
| Product location | Exact CacheRat note URL used for checkout |
| Listed deliverable | Annotated links, not an owned PDF |
| Quoted price | The sats amount in the fresh checkout invoice |
| Invoice state | Issued → wallet attempted payment → seller verified settlement |
| Buyer credential | 64-character secret stored in a private password manager |
| Fulfillment | Source list opened; the referenced documents checked independently |
| Caveat | One externally hosted link may change or disappear |

The ledger answers questions a wallet receipt alone cannot: **Which research did you buy? What was promised? Was it delivered? What did you retain?**

If a payment dispute arises, keep the receipt details private and distinguish a correct invoice from an incomplete fulfillment. A merchant can investigate a missing delivery more effectively when it knows which product and payment are involved.

## When to contact CacheRat

Contact the service when a wallet confirms payment but the site still shows no credit after checking status; when a confirmed purchase never supplies the access credential; when a delivered file is materially broken; or when the received product differs substantially from its description.

The [current CacheRat Index](https://cacherat.com/index/) identifies **theswitchboard@protonmail.com** as its support address and states that payments are **non-refundable, subject to applicable legal rights**. Report incorrect or materially broken delivery through that contact route, but do not assume a wallet can reverse a completed Lightning payment or that reporting a problem automatically entitles you to a refund.

Include the item URL, amount paid, approximate date and time, a non-sensitive receipt reference, and what the browser displayed. **Never send the access secret itself or your wallet recovery material.** If the site is temporarily unavailable, retain the information privately until you can reach its official contact route.

## The result to look for

The goal of a small Lightning research purchase is not merely to move sats. It is to obtain **defined access to useful source material** without needing a public social-media account.

Invoice issuance, verified settlement, access-secret delivery, and opening the document are separate checkpoints. Understand them, and a failed screen becomes easier to diagnose without sending a second payment unnecessarily.
