What Still Works When the Internet Goes Down in Kirksville?

A home internet outage does not automatically disable Wi-Fi, cellular service, local printers, NAS devices, downloaded media, offline maps or broadcast radio; what survives depends on which layer actually failed.

If your internet goes down but the power is still on, not everything is offline.

The first question is whether the failure is:

  • the ISP connection;
  • your router;
  • Wi-Fi itself;
  • one device;
  • one website or cloud service.

Those failures can look similar from a browser but leave very different things working.

Wi-Fi can exist without internet

Your router can continue broadcasting Wi-Fi even when its connection to the ISP is down.

That means a phone or laptop may show a strong Wi-Fi icon while websites fail to load.

In that situation, local devices may still be able to communicate with each other.

Examples can include:

  • a locally configured network printer;
  • a NAS;
  • a local media server;
  • file sharing between computers;
  • some locally controlled smart-home devices.

The word can matters. Many modern devices rely on cloud authentication even when they are physically on the same network.

Cellular service is a separate path

If your home ISP fails, your phone's cellular voice, SMS and mobile data may still work because they use the mobile carrier network.

Turning Wi-Fi off on the phone is a quick way to test whether mobile data provides a usable fallback.

Do not confuse Wi-Fi calling with cellular fallback.

Wi-Fi calling normally uses an internet connection, so a dead home ISP does not make Wi-Fi calling a useful backup unless the phone connects through some other working internet path.

Downloaded content keeps working

Media stored on the device does not need a live internet connection simply to play.

That includes:

  • downloaded music;
  • downloaded video;
  • local documents;
  • ebooks;
  • locally stored photos;
  • files on a local server that does not require cloud authentication.

Streaming-only content is different.

If an app has to contact a cloud service before it can authenticate or retrieve the file, it may fail even when the device itself is working normally.

Offline maps can still navigate

Apple Maps and Google Maps both support downloadable offline areas.

If the map data was downloaded before the outage, the phone's GPS position can still be useful without home internet.

Google Maps currently supports offline driving navigation when the entire route is inside the downloaded area, but does not provide offline transit, bicycling or walking directions and cannot provide live traffic or alternate routes.

Apple Maps currently supports offline turn-by-turn driving, walking, cycling and transit directions where supported.

Broadcast and NOAA radio are unaffected by your ISP

AM/FM broadcast receivers and NOAA Weather Radio do not depend on your home internet connection.

That makes them useful sources of information during an ISP outage.

The radio receiver still needs electricity or batteries, but the communication path is independent of your router.

A quick outage triage

Before calling the ISP, check:

  1. Is the router powered?
  2. Does Wi-Fi still appear?
  3. Do multiple devices fail the same way?
  4. Can you reach any local network device?
  5. Does cellular data work with Wi-Fi disabled?
  6. Does the modem or ONT show a loss-of-service indicator?
  7. Is the provider reporting an area outage?

Do not factory-reset a router simply because the ISP is down. A reset can erase configuration while doing nothing to repair an external outage.

Power outage or internet outage?

If the router, lights and other household equipment all died together, the primary problem may be electrical power rather than internet service.

See What Happens to Communications During a Kirksville Power Outage? for that case.

An internet outage becomes much less disruptive when important files, maps, contact information and a few entertainment options already exist locally.
