The Truman Index has been publishing student journalism since 1909.

The harder historical question is when it became a Web publication.

The strongest current evidence does not yet produce a clean launch date, but it does prove that online publishing had become a formal part of the newsroom by 2006.

## A formal online editor existed by spring 2006

A March 28, 2006 Truman Today issue identifies Chris Tharp as the Index's **online editor**.

An April 25, 2006 Truman Today issue also recognizes Tharp for work on a Web page in student-media competition.

Those university-authored records establish two things:

- the Index had an online edition by spring 2006;
- Web production was important enough to have a named editorial role.

That is stronger evidence than simply finding a later website.

## Does that make 2006 the launch year?

No.

An online-editor title proves the website existed by then.

It does not prove the site started that year.

The Index could have maintained an earlier static page or another university-hosted edition before a formal online-editor position appeared.

The earliest URL and archive capture still need to be recovered.

## The Web changed the publication cycle

A weekly print paper has a fixed production rhythm.

Online publishing makes several different things possible:

- stories can remain searchable after the issue date;
- archives can accumulate;
- breaking news can appear between print editions;
- corrections and updates can be published separately;
- photographs and supplemental material can extend beyond print space.

Later descriptions of the Index identify an online edition with weekly stories, archives and breaking-news capability.

Those descriptions establish the later direction of the publication even if they do not date the first website.

## Platform history is still incomplete

Later references associate the online Index with the College Publisher platform.

The research does not yet establish:

- when College Publisher was adopted;
- what domain or hostname preceded it;
- whether the first online Index was plain HTML;
- whether online archives were present from the beginning.

Those questions require archived URLs and platform records.

## The current endpoint

The Index now operates as part of Truman Media Network and remains both a print and online publication.

That makes its history a transition rather than a replacement story.

Print did not simply disappear when the Web arrived.

The newsroom gained another publishing channel.

## Why this matters for Kirksville's digital history

Student media often adopted online publishing differently from commercial newspapers.

The Index provides a campus-based comparison with other Kirksville media such as KTVO and the Kirksville Daily Express.

For another campus archive, see [Truman Today Online: Preserving Kirksville Campus Life on the Early Web](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/truman-today-online-preserving-kirksville-campus-life).

The responsible historical statement is:

**The Index was clearly publishing online by 2006, and the exact launch date remains an open archival question.**

That is less dramatic than inventing a birthday.

It is also much more useful.
