Swimming Lessons and Aquatic Fitness in Kirksville
Kirksville Aquatic Center offers parent-child water exploration, group and private swim lessons, plus several year-round drop-in water-fitness programs.
The Kirksville Aquatic Center offers two different kinds of programming that are easy to mix together:
- structured swim instruction that requires registration;
- drop-in aquatic fitness that generally does not.
Start by deciding whether the goal is learning to swim or exercising in the water.
Water Exploration: ages 6 months to 3 years
The City's current Water Exploration program is designed for beginning swimmers from about six months through age three with a parent participating.
Current program information lists:
- six classes per session;
- 30 minutes per class;
- registration through the City's program-registration system;
- scholarship availability.
This is an introductory parent-child water program rather than independent swim instruction for toddlers.
Group Swimming Lessons: ages 3 and older
Current group lessons are available for ages three and older.
The City uses multiple skill levels rather than placing everyone in one generic beginners class.
Current sessions include:
- six lessons;
- 45 minutes per lesson;
- Levels 1 through 5;
- registration required.
If you are uncertain which level fits, ask Aquatic Center staff rather than choosing solely from age.
Private lessons are available for adults too
Private lessons are offered for all ages, including adults.
Current program information describes:
- six private lessons;
- 30 minutes each;
- scheduling based on student and instructor availability.
Private instruction can be useful when a swimmer needs individual pacing, but availability depends on staffing.
Scholarships
The City currently advertises scholarship availability for swim lessons.
Eligibility and application rules can change.
Check the current Parks & Recreation program page when registering rather than assuming an old scholarship policy still applies.
Current 2026 price snapshot
As checked in September 2026, the City listed:
- Water Exploration: $33 member / $66 nonmember;
- Group Lessons: $33 member / $66 nonmember;
- Private Lessons: $108 member / $144 nonmember.
These are dated prices, not permanent rates.
Aquatic fitness is different
The Aquatic Center currently runs several year-round water-fitness classes in the heated indoor pool.
Unlike structured swim lessons, the main fitness classes are currently drop-in programs included with paid admission or a qualifying pool pass.
Arthritis Water Aerobics
Current schedule:
- Monday through Friday;
- 8–9 a.m.;
- very low-impact format.
This is an exercise program, not medical treatment or physical therapy.
People with health limitations should follow their own medical guidance.
Friends Water Aerobics
Current schedule:
- Monday, Wednesday and Friday;
- 1:30–2:30 p.m.;
- low-impact resistance exercise.
No advance registration is currently required.
Evening Water Aerobics
Current schedule:
- Monday, Wednesday and Thursday;
- 5–6 p.m.;
- low- to medium-impact strength and cardiovascular activity.
Again, the live Aquatic Center page should be checked before traveling because schedules change.
Seasonal outdoor fitness
During the 2026 outdoor water-park season, the City also scheduled adult lap swimming and water walking at the outdoor facility on selected weekday lunch hours.
That is seasonal programming.
Do not assume it continues after the water park closes.
Where to start
For learning:
Water Exploration → Group Lessons → Private Lessons where needed
For exercise:
choose the current drop-in class that matches your preferred schedule and intensity
For the facility itself, passes and general pool information, see Kirksville Aquatic Center: Pools, Water Park, Passes and Programs.
The good news is that Kirksville has several ways to get into the pool.
The bad news is that none of them have yet eliminated the part where you eventually have to get wet.
