How to Sign Up for Kirksville Emergency Alerts

Kirksville residents can enroll in the City's current AlertSense system for selected emergency, weather and community notifications by choosing contact methods, a location and notification groups.

The City of Kirksville currently uses an AlertSense public signup system for residents who want City notifications and selected weather alerts.

The official path starts on the City of Kirksville Alerts page. Use the City's link rather than bookmarking an old vendor URL forever, because vendors and signup addresses can change.

What you need to do

The current signup page asks for basic contact information and requires you to select a location.

The process is:

  1. Open the City's Alerts page.
  2. Follow the official signup link to Kirksville Alerts.
  3. Enter your name.
  4. Add an email address and/or cell phone number.
  5. Select a location for geographically targeted alerts.
  6. Choose the notification groups and weather alerts you want.
  7. Agree to the terms and save the registration.
  8. Respond to the confirmation text or email so the profile becomes active.

The current AlertSense page explicitly says that the subscription must be confirmed through the text or email response.

Why the location step matters

The signup interface requires a location before registration can continue.

The page says to search for an address and select the matching location. If an exact address is not found, it allows the user to search by city or ZIP code and adjust the location on the map.

Weather alerts can be geographically targeted, so this is more than a decorative address field.

What contact methods are available?

The City's page currently says users can customize delivery through:

  • email;
  • text message;
  • phone call.

It also mentions pager and voicemail use in some circumstances.

The AlertSense signup page has separate fields for email, mobile/text and voice contacts.

Message and data rates can still apply through your carrier.

What alerts can you choose?

The current signup page includes City and County emergency/advisory groups along with other optional municipal information.

It also exposes weather-alert choices.

The page currently says:

  • weather warnings can be distributed by text, email and voice call according to preferences;
  • weather watches are sent by text and email.

Weather options include categories such as tornado, thunderstorm, flood/flash flood, high wind and winter storm.

The exact list can change, so choose from what the live form offers rather than following an old screenshot.

How to modify or unsubscribe

The City Alerts page provides a separate path for existing subscribers.

Its current instruction is to open the AlertSense page and use the Modify or Unsubscribe option near the bottom.

That is preferable to simply blocking the sender, because modifying the profile lets you change which notifications you receive.

Do not make this your only warning method

Kirksville's AlertSense system is useful, but no notification service should be treated as a guaranteed single point of warning.

Delivery can depend on device settings, carrier service, power, contact information and the location associated with the profile.

Keep other warning methods available, including compatible Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone and an independent weather-information source.

Outdoor sirens also exist, but outdoor systems are not designed to guarantee that everyone inside a building will hear them.

For the difference between public alerts and emergency dispatch, see Emergency Communications in Kirksville and Adair County.
