Selling Kirksville Online: The City’s Early Tourism Websites

Kirksville’s online tourism promotion grew through the Chamber, City-backed tourism operations and visitkirksville.com rather than one clearly documented first launch.

Kirksville's tourism presence on the Web did not begin as one clean website launch under one permanent organization.

The surviving City record shows tourism promotion moving through the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce, a City-backed Tourism Office and eventually the dedicated visitkirksville.com site.

The exact first tourism webpage has not yet been recovered.

The Chamber was already the tourism organization by 2005

In April 2005, the Kirksville City Council formally recognized the Kirksville Area Chamber of Commerce as an official Destination Marketing Organization.

The Council resolution said the Chamber was already engaged primarily in tourism marketing for the city.

The City Manager also explained that the Chamber had been serving as Kirksville's tourism organization and wanted the formal designation so it could seek Missouri Division of Tourism funding.

That is strong evidence of the institutional structure before the later Tourism Office.

A lodging tax changed the scale of the operation

City planning records place another major change in 2006–07.

Kirksville voters approved a lodging tax in 2006, and City records describe the Tourism Office as opening in July 2007 under an arrangement involving the City and Chamber.

That created a more formal, funded destination-marketing operation.

The Web became one of the tools used alongside brochures, events, visitor information and advertising.

visitkirksville.com is documented by 2012

Kirksville's 2012 Community Plan explicitly instructs the tourism operation to:

  • maintain the tourism website at visitkirksville.com;
  • include the community calendar of events;
  • expand the electronic calendar with links to event organizations.

That establishes the dedicated tourism domain as an active part of Kirksville's official tourism strategy by 2012.

It does not establish 2012 as the site's launch year.

The site may have existed earlier.

Without an earlier archived capture or registration record, "by 2012" is the defensible statement.

Tourism marketing was broader than a website

The same City planning material describes an operation built around:

  • a visitor center;
  • printed promotional materials;
  • an annual events calendar;
  • day-trip promotion;
  • hunting and fishing tourism;
  • conventions and group travel;
  • local museums;
  • transportation access.

The website was part of that system rather than a replacement for it.

Early destination marketing on the Web often grew from organizations that were already doing the same work in print and in person.

The organization changed again

Kirksville's later City records show that the City eventually assumed direct responsibility for tourism operations in 2022.

The modern Visit Kirksville site now organizes information about attractions, lodging, restaurants, shopping, events and transportation.

The Chamber continues to provide community and visitor information, but the institutional relationship is not identical to the mid-2000s structure.

What remains unknown

Current research has not proved:

  • the first tourism page ever published for Kirksville;
  • the launch date of visitkirksville.com;
  • whether the City, Chamber or another organization published the earliest lodging and attraction lists;
  • the exact design of the earliest tourism site.

Those questions require older archived captures, Chamber publications and tourism-board records.

The useful historical answer

Kirksville was promoting itself to visitors through the Chamber by at least 2005, formalized a funded Tourism Office in 2007, and was maintaining visitkirksville.com as an official tourism tool by 2012.

That chronology is less tidy than assigning one birth date to "Kirksville tourism online."

It is also better supported.
