# Party Line: The Kirksville Radio Program That Became a Community Marketplace

KIRX Party Line remains an on-air buy, sell and giveaway program for private individuals, preserving a radio-based local marketplace that predates web classifieds.

Before online marketplaces made local buying and selling searchable, radio could perform a similar job live.

KIRX Party Line is a surviving example.

The program turns the radio station into a spoken community classifieds board.

## How the current program works

KIRX's current Party Line page says the program airs:

- Monday through Saturday;
- 10:00–10:30 a.m.

The current rules say it is for **private parties rather than businesses**.

Participants may list up to three items they want to:

- buy;
- sell;
- give away.

Those operational details are time-sensitive and should be rechecked on the station's live page before publication.

## Why radio works for classifieds

Local radio already provides several things a community marketplace needs:

- geographic focus;
- recurring audience;
- immediacy;
- low technical barrier;
- familiar host.

Someone does not need a website, app or account to hear what neighbors are selling.

That made the format useful long before web classifieds existed.

## Was Party Line there from KIRX's beginning?

The current research does **not** prove that.

Compiled station histories describe Party Line as an early KIRX program that survives into the present.

That supports "early."

It does not support:

- launched in 1947;
- aired continuously since 1947;
- always used the same rules;
- always aired at the same time.

The earliest dated schedule or station log still needs to be found.

## Charlie Porter is part of the historical trail

Local-history material associates longtime KIRX employee Charlie or Charles Porter with hosting Party Line.

That gives the program a named historical figure.

A complete host chronology still needs station records, interviews and program schedules.

## The format is different from a normal advertisement

Party Line is not simply businesses purchasing radio spots.

The current rules explicitly frame it around private individuals.

That puts the program closer to:

- newspaper classified ads;
- bulletin boards;
- swap sheets;
- online local marketplaces.

The difference is that the inventory is spoken live.

## How has the program changed?

That remains a research question.

Useful evidence would include:

- old newspaper radio schedules;
- KIRX logs;
- promotional material;
- archived recordings;
- interviews with hosts;
- historical station rule sheets.

Those records could answer whether earlier callers could list more items, whether businesses were once allowed and how long the current half-hour format has existed.

## Why it survived the Internet

The research does not support one definitive reason.

But the program still provides something online marketplaces do not exactly reproduce:

a scheduled, locally hosted, shared community moment.

Everyone listening hears the same marketplace at the same time.

## The responsible historical claim

The current evidence supports:

**Party Line is an early KIRX community-classifieds program that still operates.**

It does not yet support a precise launch year.

For the station's launch history, see [KIRX 1947: The Year Kirksville Got Its Own Radio Station](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/kirx-1947-year-kirksville-got-radio-station) once that research is complete.

The format is old-fashioned in the most literal sense.

It still works because local information does not stop being useful just because the delivery system has knobs.
