That might be the strangest part.

A tourist can ask for directions and receive a sentence like:

> “Go down Normal, then head toward Osteopathy.”

Which sounds less like navigation and more like a very calm medical intervention. 🩺

## Yes, Normal is a real street

Truman State University uses **100 E. Normal Avenue** as its main address.

This creates wonderful local phrases such as:

- “I’m on Normal.”
- “Turn left at Normal.”
- “Normal is backed up.”
- “I try to avoid Normal around 3:00.”

Every one of these statements sounds like somebody is describing their emotional development. 😭

## Then there is Osteopathy

North Osteopathy Street is also extremely real.

City facilities, parks and other ordinary places use it as an address, so residents routinely say things like:

> “Take Osteopathy north.”

To outsiders, this sounds like an instruction from a physician who has completely given up on verbs.

To us, it means **drive the car that way**. 🚙➡️🦴

## Kirksville directions require context

This town has reached the point where the following conversation is perfectly plausible:

**Tourist:** “Am I going the right way?”

**Resident:** “No, get back on Normal.”

**Tourist:** “Emotionally?”

**Resident:** “No, geographically.”

**Tourist:** “Then what?”

**Resident:** “Take Osteopathy.”

**Tourist:** “I’m leaving.” 😂

## We should appreciate this more

Most towns have Main Street.

Kirksville has streets that sound like somebody named them during a faculty meeting.

And after enough years here, you stop hearing it.

That is how you know you are officially local.

When somebody says **Normal and Osteopathy** and your first thought is traffic instead of philosophy, congratulations. 🎉
