Memorial Park in Kirksville: Recreation and Veterans Memorial History

Memorial Park offers a playground, shelter, basketball and pickleball court, restrooms and walking loop, while its former major memorial artifacts now stand near Rotary Park.

Memorial Park is a small neighborhood park near downtown Kirksville with recreation facilities and a veterans-related history that is easy to misunderstand.

The park still carries the Memorial Park name.

Several of its best-known historic memorial objects are now somewhere else.

Where is Memorial Park?

Memorial Park is at 404 E. Cottonwood St.

The City describes it as five blocks west of Baltimore Street / Business U.S. 63 and a short distance northeast of downtown.

What is in the park today?

Current City information lists:

  • covered picnic shelter;
  • two picnic tables;
  • electricity;
  • barbecue grill;
  • basketball court;
  • pickleball lines;
  • playground structures for children up to age 12;
  • traditional swings;
  • restrooms;
  • sidewalk walking loop.

The paved loop around the park is approximately 0.15 mile.

The shelter can be reserved

The current shelter measures approximately 14 by 33 feet and includes two tables.

The City lists it among reservable park shelters through the Parks & Recreation rental system.

For the general process, see How to Reserve a Picnic Shelter in Kirksville.

Why is it called Memorial Park?

The City's current park description says Memorial Park was named for and dedicated to veterans of foreign wars.

The live page does not establish the original dedication date.

That date should not be invented from the park's name or from later memorial records.

Where did the historic memorial pieces go?

The City specifically says three objects formerly located on the southern half of Memorial Park are now at the Adair County Veterans Memorial Plaza:

  • obelisk;
  • World War I German howitzer;
  • Civil War-era cannon.

So a visitor looking specifically for those pieces should not expect to find them at Memorial Park today.

The Veterans Memorial Plaza is by Rotary Park

The Adair County Veterans Memorial Plaza is at 1201 N. Baltimore St., adjacent to Rotary Park.

The City says a small portion of Rotary Park was donated in 2000 for development of the memorial plaza.

That site is separate from Memorial Park.

For Rotary Park itself, see Rotary Park in Kirksville.

What Memorial Park is best understood as today

The modern park is primarily a neighborhood recreation space with:

  • playground;
  • court;
  • walking loop;
  • shelter.

Its name preserves the veterans connection, while the larger memorial display has moved to the dedicated Veterans Memorial Plaza.

That distinction prevents one of the easiest local-history mistakes: arriving at the right-named park looking for objects that the City moved somewhere else.
