How Kirksville’s Large Household Item Curbside Pickup Works
Kirksville currently allows one large household item per household each week beside the trash tote, but appliances, yard waste, hazardous liquids, tires, batteries and construction debris use other disposal paths.
Kirksville's current residential trash program includes a useful weekly allowance:
one large household item per household per week beside the trash tote.
But that allowance has important exclusions.
The item must be reasonably dry
The City's current page says the large item must not be wet or water-saturated.
A soaked mattress or other heavy absorbent item does not meet the published rule.
Several categories are excluded
The current City list excludes:
- batteries;
- tires;
- liquids such as paint, gas or oil;
- construction material;
- demolition material;
- remodeling debris;
- yard waste;
- vegetation;
- appliances.
Those materials need another disposal route.
Appliances are separate
Appliances are specifically excluded from ordinary weekly bulky-item pickup.
The City says a separate appliance pickup is held yearly.
Do not place a refrigerator or washer at the curb simply because one large item is normally allowed.
Hazardous liquids are separate
Paint, gasoline, oil and similar liquids do not belong in the weekly large-item program.
Kirksville has a separate Household Hazardous Waste process.
See How to Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste in Kirksville.
Yard waste is separate
Branches, vegetation and yard waste follow the Brush Site, seasonal brush-pickup or current yard-waste collection paths.
Do not mix them into a furniture set-out.
Timing: use the earlier published deadline
Current City materials contain a small timing discrepancy.
The live Trash & Recycling page says trash should be curbside by 6:00 a.m. to ensure pickup.
A City knowledge-base summary of Sec. 30-30 says material may be set out after noon the prior day and not after 6:30 a.m. on collection day.
Putting the item out by 6:00 a.m. satisfies the stricter operational instruction.
Do not put it out before noon the previous day.
When the item is ambiguous
If you are unsure whether a large object qualifies, contact RTS Waste Services before setting it out.
The City's current page lists RTS as the residential trash carrier.
It is better to verify an unusual item than leave it curbside for days.
One item does not mean one pile
The rule is one large household item.
Do not assume a loose pile of remodeling waste, multiple furniture pieces or bags of material counts as one object.
Use the right disposal path
The program works best when residents use it for ordinary bulky household objects and route excluded materials correctly.
