KCOM Goes Online: Reconstructing Osteopathic Medicine’s Early Kirksville Web Presence
By 1999, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine had active kcom.edu email, faculty Web material and an official public website.
Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine had an active public Web ecosystem by 1999.
That statement is stronger than simply finding an old homepage.
Several independent records show the kcom.edu domain being used for institutional email, faculty course material and an official school website.
Faculty email proves active institutional infrastructure
PubMed-indexed publications from 1999 preserve KCOM faculty addresses using hosts under kcom.edu.
Examples include addresses on fileserver2.kcom.edu and fileserver5.kcom.edu.
That proves the domain was doing real institutional work.
It was not merely a reserved name.
Faculty course material was online in 1999
A surviving KCOM faculty page titled Infectious Diseases Fall 1999 gives students instructions for viewing lecture notes with browsers such as:
- Netscape Navigator;
- Internet Explorer.
The page also uses a kcom.edu faculty email address.
That is direct evidence that KCOM was using the Web as part of teaching by 1999.
The official school website is independently documented
A Student Doctor Network post dated December 2, 1999 distinguishes between:
- an independent student website;
- www.kcom.edu, identified as the official website of the school.
A March 2000 school profile again lists www.kcom.edu.
Those references give us a strong external checkpoint:
KCOM had an official public website by late 1999.
Late 1999 is not necessarily launch day
The evidence does not establish:
- domain registration date;
- first homepage publication;
- first archived capture;
- first admissions page;
- original hosting software.
The website may have existed earlier.
The surviving references tell us when it is definitely documented, not when the first HTML file was uploaded.
The Web presence was broader than one homepage
By 1999 the domain supported several functions:
- official institutional website;
- faculty email;
- course pages;
- file-server hostnames.
That is important because it shows KCOM had moved beyond a brochure-style homepage into a broader networked environment.
The museum later used the same domain
A 2003 museum newsletter still prints:
- museum@kcom.edu;
- www.kcom.edu/museum.
That continuity shows the domain remained part of institutional identity into the early 2000s.
ATSU branding changed the public identity
The Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine later became part of the A.T. Still University umbrella identity.
Modern ATSU pages preserve some older KCOM material, but the current atsu.edu site should not be projected backward into the 1999 environment.
What can be said safely?
The current evidence supports:
By 1999, kcom.edu was an active institutional domain supporting official Web pages, faculty publishing and email.
It does not yet support:
KCOM launched its first website in 1999.
That difference is small in wording and large in historical accuracy.
