The History of Kirksville Regional Airport
Kirksville aviation history runs from a 1924 north-side grass strip to the current airport site established in 1930, wartime training in the 1940s and later regional commercial service.
Kirksville Regional Airport has more than one reasonable "beginning."
That is the first thing to understand about its history.
Local aviation activity, the first established airfield, the current airport site and scheduled commercial airline service all began at different times.
1924: the first local airfield
The City of Kirksville says aviation in Kirksville began in 1924 with a small grass strip north of town owned by Roy B. "Cap" Dodson.
That field was not the present airport.
It represents the first established local airfield in the City's own aviation chronology.
See Kirksville’s First Airport and the Man Who Started It.
1930: the current site enters the story
The City's current airport history says the present airport location, four miles south of Kirksville, was established in 1930 when the federal government built an emergency landing strip there.
A City cultural-resource survey repeats the 1930 emergency-field origin.
That means the modern airport site has a different origin from Dodson's north-side grass strip.
Why do some records say 1941?
FAA-derived modern airport data gives a May 1941 activation date.
That does not necessarily contradict the 1930 City history.
The two dates may refer to different administrative milestones:
- 1930 — emergency landing field established at the site;
- 1941 — later formal airport activation in the federal record.
The current research has not yet recovered enough federal documentation to define the 1941 date more precisely.
World War II transformed the airport's importance
The City says the airport became especially important in 1942 as part of the Civilian Pilot Training Program and War Training Service for the Army Air Corps.
Truman records place the college-affiliated training program slightly earlier, beginning in January 1941.
That is not necessarily a contradiction.
The institutional program and the airport's wartime expansion can have separate dates.
See World War II Flight Training at Kirksville’s Airport.
Later commercial-air milestones need careful sourcing
Secondary aviation histories commonly give dates for:
- Ozark Air Lines beginning service in 1960;
- a 1967 local bond issue;
- major runway and terminal improvements in 1968;
- Ozark ending service in 1976.
Those are useful research leads.
They are not treated here as fully verified because the current source cache does not yet contain the necessary period airline timetables, City records or newspaper confirmation.
Clarence Cannon Memorial Airport
The City's official airport history says the airport became known as Clarence Cannon Memorial Airport starting in 1971.
The City credits Congressman Clarence Cannon, longtime chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, as instrumental in airport expansion.
The airport was renamed Kirksville Regional Airport in 1984.
Essential Air Service
The City says Kirksville has participated in the federal Essential Air Service program since the 1980s.
That program became important for maintaining scheduled passenger service in smaller communities after airline deregulation changed the economics of regional routes.
The airport today
Current City information describes Kirksville Regional Airport as a commercial-service airport four miles south of Kirksville with a runway longer than 6,000 feet and modern instrument and support systems.
Those current features belong to the endpoint of the history, not the beginning.
The clean chronology
The strongest first-party timeline is:
1924 — first local grass strip north of town
1930 — current airport site established as an emergency landing field
1941–42 — wartime training era develops
1971 — Clarence Cannon Memorial Airport name
1984 — Kirksville Regional Airport name
1980s onward — Essential Air Service era
The missing commercial-airline dates should be filled from period records rather than from repeated secondary timelines.
Airport history gets clearer when "first airport," "current site" and "commercial service" are treated as three different milestones instead of one.
