Why Git Becomes More Useful When AI Is Writing More of Your Code
AI increases code-change velocity, so Git becomes more valuable as a way to preserve known-good checkpoints, inspect diffs, isolate experiments and undo specific bad changes without guessing what happened.
AI can change a project faster than a person can comfortably remember every edit.
That makes version control more useful.
Git gives you a visible boundary between the known-good state, the proposed changes and the history you intentionally accepted.
Start major AI edits from a clean tree
Run git status before asking an agent to make broad changes.
Know which files were already modified or untracked.
Otherwise the AI's work becomes mixed with your unfinished work, and a later cleanup can destroy changes that had nothing to do with the agent.
Inspect the diff
After the edit, use git diff.
Look at which files changed and what changed inside them.
Do not review only the file the assistant talked about. Agents can alter configuration, tests, dependencies or neighboring files as part of a larger task.
A diff turns “the AI fixed it” into something inspectable.
Keep changes small enough to understand
Ask for one logical change at a time when practical.
A small diff is easier to review, test and undo than a giant repair touching unrelated systems.
This also helps the assistant because the goal and failure surface are narrower.
Commit known-good checkpoints
A focused commit gives the project a named point in history.
Use a message that describes the actual change.
Do not commit merely because the code exists. Run the relevant tests and inspect the result first.
The commit means “this is the state I intentionally kept,” not “Git proved the code is correct.”
Use branches for experiments
A branch is useful when an AI-assisted change may become large or uncertain.
The experiment can evolve without making the main line the scratchpad.
If the idea fails, the main branch remains a clear reference.
Review tests as critically as implementation
AI can modify tests too.
A suspiciously easy success may come from weakening an assertion, skipping a test or changing expected behavior to match a bug.
Review test changes with the same attention as application code.
Static analysis and automated tests help, but human review still decides whether the change matches the intended behavior.
Use the right recovery tool
Git provides several ways to recover files or undo committed changes.
git restore, git revert and history-editing commands solve different problems.
Use the least destructive operation that fits the situation, and check the documentation when uncertain.
Do not learn recovery by experimenting on the only copy of uncommitted work.
Keep secrets and generated data out of commits
Git preserves history.
That is useful for code and dangerous for credentials that should never have been committed.
Use ignore rules and proper secret handling before an AI agent starts creating or modifying project files.
Git is not a backup
A local repository can be lost with the disk.
Use a remote repository or another independent backup where the project matters.
Version control protects the history of intentional source changes; backup protects the data itself.
The more code AI can generate in one burst, the more valuable these checkpoints become. Using AI to Learn Python Instead of Simply Asking It to Do Everything covers the learning side, while Why Kirksville Computer Users Should Learn Basic Scripting in the AI Era covers small automations.
