# What Business Software Must Be Checked Before an Office Moves to Linux?

A business Linux migration audit must cover not only installed applications but also shared workflows, browser services, licensing, identity, peripherals, VPNs, device management, templates, backups and Windows-only exceptions.

A business software audit is broader than asking, "Does this program have a Linux version?"

An office depends on **workflows, integrations, licenses, hardware and shared systems**.

The audit should record those dependencies before anybody approves a migration.

## Create one row for every business dependency

For each system, record:

- who uses it;
- how critical it is;
- vendor-supported Linux client?;
- supported browser path?;
- required features;
- hardware dependency;
- identity/MFA dependency;
- acceptable alternative?;
- tested result;
- fallback or Windows requirement.

That output becomes the evidence behind the migration decision.

## Productivity documents

Check:

- Microsoft 365;
- LibreOffice compatibility;
- macros;
- add-ins;
- templates;
- tracked changes;
- complex Excel workbooks;
- mail merge;
- document-signing workflows.

Microsoft 365 web apps can cover many browser workflows, but web access alone does not guarantee that a complex desktop workflow survives.

## Email, calendar and meetings

Verify:

- Outlook web or another supported client;
- shared mailboxes;
- calendar delegation;
- meeting plugins;
- conferencing;
- contact synchronization;
- browser notifications.

Microsoft currently supports Outlook on the web in Firefox and Chrome on Linux but warns that some features may be unavailable.

Test the actual account configuration.

## Accounting and line-of-business software

Accounting is frequently a hard dependency.

QuickBooks Online currently supports Linux browsers, but not every Intuit product follows that path.

Also audit:

- payroll;
- POS;
- CRM;
- industry software;
- estimating/invoicing systems;
- EDI;
- local databases;
- licensing servers.

Do not let a product family name stand in for the exact edition.

## Creative and specialty applications

Adobe Creative Cloud desktop requirements currently list Windows and macOS rather than Linux.

The same issue can appear with:

- CAD;
- engineering tools;
- specialty media software;
- proprietary document systems.

Treat vendor-supported platforms as a hard fact, not a suggestion.

## Identity, VPN and security tooling

Check:

- VPN clients;
- MFA;
- smart cards;
- USB security keys;
- endpoint security;
- device-management agents;
- remote-support software;
- browser security extensions.

A browser application may work perfectly while the security agent required by company policy does not.

## Printers and specialty hardware

Inventory exact models:

- printers;
- scanners;
- label printers;
- receipt printers;
- payment terminals;
- card readers;
- webcams;
- audio devices.

Printing and scanning are separate capabilities even on the same multifunction device.

## File shares, cloud sync and backups

Check:

- SMB/NAS access;
- OneDrive/Google Drive/other sync tools;
- backup agents;
- restore procedures;
- shared templates;
- mapped drives;
- local archive locations.

A migration is incomplete if users can work but the backup system silently stopped.

## Administration matters too

The office must be supportable after the migration.

Document:

- update policy;
- software deployment;
- local admin rules;
- remote support;
- standard configuration;
- onboarding/offboarding;
- inventory management.

Those are business dependencies even though ordinary users rarely see them.

## Keep Windows where the audit says Windows is required

A business does not fail its Linux evaluation because one specialized system remains on Windows.

A documented exception can be safer than an unsupported workaround.
