How Appliance Disposal and Pickup Works in Kirksville
Kirksville excludes appliances from its normal weekly large-item curbside pickup and says a separate appliance pickup is held yearly.
Kirksville's normal weekly large-item pickup does not include appliances.
The City's current trash page says each household may place one large household item beside the trash tote each week, but appliances are specifically excluded. Instead, the City says a separate appliance pickup is held yearly.
That means a refrigerator, washer, dryer or similar appliance should not simply be treated like an old chair or mattress.
Do not put an appliance out under the weekly large-item rule
The weekly curbside rule is useful for ordinary bulky household items, but the City lists appliances among the items that are not accepted through that program.
The practical rule is simple:
Do not set an appliance at the curb expecting the regular weekly bulky-item collection to take it.
Kirksville currently contracts residential trash service through RTS Waste Services.
The appliance program is separate
The live City page says a separate appliance pickup is held yearly.
As of this article's September 2026 verification, the page does not publish:
- the next appliance-pickup date;
- a current accepted-appliance list;
- whether advance registration is required;
- a current fee or sticker requirement;
- preparation instructions for refrigerators or other refrigerant-containing equipment.
Those details have changed in past City programs, so older announcements should not be reused as though they were current.
Why old instructions are risky
Kirksville has used different appliance-pickup arrangements over time.
Past programs have involved different schedules, outside recyclers, fees and accepted-item lists. That history is useful for understanding why the City separates appliances from ordinary trash, but it is poor material for deciding what to do with an appliance today.
A decade-old instruction sheet is not a 2026 disposal rule.
What to do before moving the appliance outside
Check the current City Trash & Recycling page for an announced appliance event.
If the City has not posted the year's event details yet, contact the current trash carrier or City staff before setting the appliance out.
The current City page lists RTS Waste Services at 660-784-2474 for trash-service questions.
That is especially important for refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and other appliances containing refrigerant. Do not improvise refrigerant removal merely to make an appliance eligible for pickup.
If you cannot wait for the annual pickup
The City's page establishes the annual appliance program but does not currently publish an always-available alternative disposal procedure.
So the safe next step is to ask the City or RTS what currently approved options exist.
Do not assume that an appliance can be left beside a dumpster, at the brush site or with ordinary trash.
The rule worth remembering
For normal bulky household trash, Kirksville allows one eligible large item with the weekly collection.
Appliances are the exception.
They use a separate annual pickup process, and the event-specific instructions should be checked each year before anything goes to the curb.
