Imagine promoting a fantasy computer game by releasing a separate game in which fairies battle each other through email. That was one of the ideas preserved by Zanzarah's original website.

[Visit the original Zanzarah domain](https://www.zanzarah.de/).

The site advertised **Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal**, developed by Germany's Funatics Software. The surviving [2002 news page](https://www.zanzarah.de/news.php), still represented in search indexes even when direct requests fail, announces the game's **April 26, 2002** release. It also announces a title-song MP3, developer interviews, forums and a small companion program called **Mailing-Monsters**.

This is genuinely period material, not a modern storefront offering an old game at a discount. The original HTML identifies Funatics Software and copyright 2001; the site's accessible fragments retain the promotional language written before and immediately after the game went on sale.

## The little game that lived in your inbox

The [Goodies page](https://www.zanzarah.de/goodies.php) introduces Mailing-Monsters as an official downloadable game for sending fairy combat challenges by email. An update points to version **1.2** and describes it as a fix for bugs in the initial release. These are surviving descriptions of the software, not confirmation that the old executable works on current systems.

The [developer interview](https://www.zanzarah.de/interview.php) is even more revealing. A fan named Fliwa asks whether Mailing-Monsters will be expanded or incorporated into *The Hidden Portal*. The developers explain that it was created as a small extra rather than a planned permanent product. They also describe a two-year development process whose initial concept dates to late **1999**.

Another question addresses tools for making custom levels. Funatics says a simple exporter would not be enough because its internal development tools were undocumented and not prepared for public use. It is a neat look at the realities behind an enthusiast's wish to modify the game.

The English-language [features page](https://www.zanzarah.de/featuresuk.php) explains the premise: an eighteen-year-old heroine enters a divided magical world, collects fairies and trains them to fight. The site used screenshots, downloads and fan correspondence to bring that fictional world to potential players.

Because the homepage and some subpages currently time out, the indexed historical pages should not be mistaken for a fully functioning original website. Their text nevertheless preserves a specific moment in PC-game promotion, when a developer could connect its main game to a tiny email-based experiment.
