A kite can be a flying toy, but in Yasuo Shimura's hands it became a painted wish: for luck, strength, long life, or prosperity. A little webpage from 2000 still hangs the pictures together.

The page identifies Shimura as an artist of Edo-style and other traditional Japanese kites, active in kite making since 1980. By the time its short introduction was written, it says he had held eight individual exhibitions at a Tokyo art gallery. Its last-update date is August 25, 2000.

What follows is not a modern slideshow. It is a simple matrix of linked pictures, each with an English caption. There is a rising dragon, a mounted soldier, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a dragon with a tiger, a carp climbing a waterfall, portraits of women, a festival coat, and an image labeled 'Tattoo.' Small images invite clicks for larger versions. The webpage credits Shimura's permission to display the work.

## When a personal gallery served as an international exhibition

The subject matter matters as much as the shape of the kites. The carp fighting upstream, for example, is an image of perseverance; a dragon can suggest power or good fortune. The site's introduction explicitly says Shimura regarded kite painting as a way to express hopes for health, beauty, success, and wealth. That makes the page a record of the artist's intentions, not merely a directory of photographs.

The [larger Masters of Kites in Japan directory](https://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~ea8a-tkkw/master.html) situates him among artists working on Edo kites, miniature kites, bird designs, and elaborate kite trains. Its own last-update date, February 2002, shows that this was a curated network of individual craft pages.

An earlier Ancient Web article covers Heizo Itoh, another artist in this directory. Shimura's gallery is a separate exhibition about painted imagery rather than a duplicate account of Itoh's Hamamatsu kites.

The English text is imperfect, the layout is basic, and the images do the heavy lifting. Those are not deficiencies in a record of a hand-built international showcase.
