# Ancient Web: XXIIVV Turned a 2008 Personal Wiki into a Memory Machine Devine Lu Linvega's wiki, founded in 2008, preserves project diaries, philosophical notes and an unusual argument for durable small-software publishing. 2026-10-18 :: Switchboard Tech Services ![Ancient Web: XXIIVV Turned a 2008 Personal Wiki into a Memory Machine](https://switchboardtechservices.com/static/images/defaults/articles.webp) Part of the [Ancient Web Collection](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/ancient-web-collection/). The most interesting thing about a personal wiki is that it does not need to decide whether it is a diary, a notebook or a homemade encyclopedia. It can be all three. [Visit XXIIVV's discourse page](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/discourse.html). The author, Devine Lu Linvega, says in the [site's own history](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/about.html) that XXIIVV began in **2008** as a personal assistant for keeping journal entries, creative projects and curated knowledge together. The current wiki is not a frozen 2008 interface. It has been reworked using software written in Uxntal for the small Uxn virtual machine, specifically because its creator wants a record less vulnerable to changing software fashions. That makes the present site an instructive continuation of the personal Web rather than a newly constructed imitation of its appearance. ## How to disagree, filed next to everything else The [discourse article](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/discourse.html) has almost no conventional essay structure. Instead it is a linked reference sheet of conversational ideas. It begins with three questions to consider before speaking, quotes philosopher Daniel Dennett's presentation of Rapoport's rules, and sorts argument tactics from careful discussion of evidence down to insults and social pressure. A second classification compares responses by whether they address a central point or merely attack the speaker's tone. Other entries explain straw-manning, steel-manning, inferential distance and rhetorical manipulation. It is less a finished theory of conversation than an index of tools the author has found worth remembering. The site's [directory](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/directory.html) extends the method across a vast range of topics. The [Merveilles page](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/merveilles.html) links software, a webring, HyperCard experiments and a community concerned with low-power computing and durable tools. The [About page](https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/about.html) explains that source files can be downloaded and distinguishes source-code licenses from the terms applying to images and audio. Even some language choices become a design experiment. The author mentions using a simplified Latin devised by Giuseppe Peano and provides a translation toggle. The wiki is therefore both the archive and a changing laboratory for how an archive might work. XXIIVV preserves an older independent-Web instinct: the information should remain linkable, portable and owned by its author, even when the author keeps improving the machinery underneath it.
