The Webpal survival pages preserve an amateur civil-defense archive that proposed burying old school buses and reproduced Kearny Air Pump instructions.

Some survivalist websites imagined an underground fortress. One corner of Webpal suggested that old school buses could be pressed into service—and then preserved an email from a builder whose bus roof collapsed.

[Visit Webpal's shelter-building index](https://webpal.org/SAFE/aaasurvival/shelter/shelterbuilding.htm).

The compact directory links a bus-based shelter proposal, basement plans, air filtering, ventilation and the Kearny Air Pump. Its surrounding site, organized into sections such as Survival, Recovery and Renewal, reflects a particular do-it-yourself civil-defense culture. A previously covered Webpal section documented the Ark Two project; this collection of planning documents offers a different perspective on the practical advice circulating around it.

## The accident hiding in the footnotes

The [bus shelter page](https://webpal.org/SAFE/aaasurvival/shelter/busplan.htm) advertises space for 24 people, a ten-day construction period and a low Canadian-dollar budget. The proposal is written like a shopping-and-building notebook, with price estimates, improvised materials and diagrams. Those figures are the original writer's claims, not verified estimates of safety or effectiveness.

Near the bottom, the page reproduces an especially revealing exchange. A correspondent reports that the roof of a buried bus collapsed after earth was placed over it, destroying the project. The webmaster responds with speculations about the cause and explains that some warnings were emphasized after hearing the account. Even in the author's own archive, the difference between a promising idea and a dangerous physical experiment is painfully visible.

The [ventilation section](https://webpal.org/SAFE/aaasurvival/shelter/ventilation/kap/kap.htm) republishes material identified as coming from the 1999 edition of *Nuclear War Survival Skills*. Its description of a manually operated air pump treats heat, moisture and crowding as survival problems alongside radiation. A neighboring page discusses alternative ventilation designs.

The reproduced instructions are historical artifacts, **not** a safe or adequate guide to designing an occupied underground structure. Structural loading, collapse, ventilation and radiation protection require qualified, current engineering and emergency-management guidance. Several assurances on the old pages are unsupported by independent testing here.

What makes the site worth preserving is not the reliability of every recommendation. It is the combination of improvised civil defense, scanned or transcribed reference material and reader correspondence showing how the ideas were actually received.
