Ancient Web: WaveThemes Collected the Sounds of Television in Thousands of Files
WaveThemes preserved television and cartoon theme recordings in an enormous, personally managed sound-file archive that grew through the dial-up era.

Before a television theme could be summoned from a streaming search box, someone had to find a recording, encode it, name the file, and give everybody a link.

WaveThemes was a personal project devoted to gathering television and cartoon theme music. The surviving alternate homepage describes an archive of more than 12,500 files and repeatedly directs visitors toward a separate theme-song index. Its webmaster stresses that it was a hobby, not a job, and calls himself a retired geek who would rather spend time with his grandchildren than continue typing away at the collection.
The original queued address, wavethemes.net, was associated with the project's bulletin board. That root address is not reliably accessible in current browsing, while the companion homepage and dated upload notes preserve the archive's identity.
Theme songs as portable files
The upload page describes files made with an older MPEG Layer-3 compression format, sometimes wearing a .wav extension even though a user may need to rename them to .mp3 to play them properly. One section lists additions from December 2020 through February 2021, and another points to television, cartoon, and commercial recordings.
That practical explanation says a great deal about the sound-file Web. A visitor did not always receive a player and a playlist. Sometimes they received a filename and instructions for persuading the correct software to understand it.
WaveThemes also preserves remnants of its social machinery: links to a bulletin board, a wish list of missing themes, and notes inviting visitors to contribute. The homepage claims that theme songs were sent by email to 91 countries from 1995 through 2005, and reports enormous cumulative download totals. These are the webmaster's unaudited figures, not verified circulation statistics.
Its navigation points beyond television to MIDI themes, commercials, and a separate patriotic audio-and-graphics site. That latter subsection has its own Ancient Web article; the main WaveThemes project is a different subject, concerned with a large, genre-crossing collection of recognisable television sounds.
Not all archive links still resolve, and surviving listings do not guarantee that every recording can be played or legally reused. What remains unmistakable is the hand-built filing system and the extraordinary persistence behind it.
