In June 1978, Walter Muma left Toronto on a moped and headed west. He did not stop at the next town. He kept going until he had made a loop through Yukon, Alaska, and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, then rode all the way home.

Muma says the journey lasted three months and covered **18,660 kilometers**, or about **11,500 miles**, on an unmodified moped. Decades later he turned the experience into a detailed website with more than 300 photographs, a route-by-route narrative, articles, and technical notes about the machine.

The homepage breaks the trip into practical geographical chapters: Toronto to Dawson Creek, the Alaska Highway, Yukon and Alaska, the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, the Stewart–Cassiar Highway southward, and the return east to Ontario.

Read the [westbound chapter](https://mopedtrip.com/goingwest/index.html) and the trip becomes much more tangible. Muma left on June 3, 1978, and took twenty days to reach Dawson Creek, the beginning of the Alaska Highway. He describes Ontario's Highway 129 as a lonely 215-mile road without towns, alongside the Mississagi River and wooded hills.

That sort of detail is what the web edition preserves best. A map supplies a line; a rider's travelogue supplies the long, empty stretches between fuel and food.

## More than an improbable mileage claim

Muma's [“How I Did It” pages](https://mopedtrip.com/howididit/howididit01.html) explain the equipment and logistics rather than presenting the ride as pure romance. The site also collects other moped travelers' journeys and includes a recorded radio interview from February 14, 2005.

The author once pursued recognition as having made the longest journey on a true unmodified moped. His homepage says a 2006–2007 journey by another rider subsequently surpassed that distance. Those are claims reported by the site itself, not independent certification of a world record.

In the [About page](https://mopedtrip.com/other/about.html), the author explains the personal effort behind digitizing and presenting the photographs and trip history. The pages are a good example of how an older journey acquired a second life as early-web-style long-form documentation.

Travel publishing now tends toward brief clips and location pins. Muma chose a sequence of chapters, photo captions, mechanical explanations, and a record of how the road felt on a very small machine. It is patient documentation of an adventure that was not remotely patient in execution.
