A single role-playing game can contain hundreds of little pictures that players barely notice. [VideoGameSprites.net](http://VideoGameSprites.net) built a catalog where every character pose, enemy, background, and object could have its own place.

[Visit VideoGameSprites.net](https://www.videogamesprites.net/).

The homepage gives a creation date of November 1, 2003, and a last-update date of February 27, 2014. Its tally stands at 36,088 sprites. That is the site's published count, not a fresh inventory or an assurance that every file still loads.

The directory is organized first by hardware generation. Nintendo Entertainment System titles such as *Final Fantasy* and *The Legend of Zelda* appear alongside Super Nintendo games including *Chrono Trigger*, *EarthBound*, and *Secret of Mana*. The PlayStation and Game Boy Advance have their own sections, while a PC category houses a particularly large *Furcadia* collection.

## The encyclopedia starts one frame at a time

The [first Final Fantasy index](https://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy1/) shows the method. Party members, non-player characters, bosses, enemies, objects, and battle backgrounds receive separate counts. Its page dates the collection to November 22, 2003, with an August 2008 revision.

The [Legend of Zelda index](https://www.videogamesprites.net/Zelda1/) was created in March 2004 and breaks its total of 301 images into Link, NPCs, bosses, enemies, and objects. A visitor who wants to compare enemy designs does not have to extract the game's files or search a screenshot database.

Other indexes reveal unexpected differences in scale. *Final Fantasy V* is listed with 4,240 sprites, while *Final Fantasy Tactics* has 4,514. The *Furcadia* section advertises 12,336, suggesting a very different kind of task from cataloging one console cartridge.

The site also offers Windows icon files, link buttons, a FAQ, and affiliate galleries. These small additions locate it in the culture of hobby webmasters exchanging graphics and backlinks.

A sprite archive is not proof of permission to reuse copyrighted game art commercially. Its preservation interest lies in categorization, dates, and the persistence of tiny design details that might be lost inside an emulator screenshot.
