Ancient Web: Sam’s Toybox Turned a 1998 eBay Hobby Into a Toy Museum
Sam Cancilla started Sam's Toybox in October 1998, building a photograph-rich catalog of childhood toys with instructions and manufacturer indexes.

Sam Cancilla went looking for an old Mattel Power Shop toy, discovered online auctions, and accidentally started building a museum in his spare bedroom.
In the site's origin story, Cancilla says his collection began expanding after an eBay purchase in May 1998. He obtained a digital camera and scanner, and by October 1998 his toy website had begun taking shape. It initially featured roughly thirty pages, growing to more than two hundred by early 2011.
Every weird toy gets a shelf
The homepage is one enormous alphabetical index, from Amaze-A-Matics and Aqua Diver through Think-A-Tron, Vac-U-Form, Vertibird, and Which Witch?. It also sorts items by manufacturer, including A.C. Gilbert, Aurora, Hasbro, Ideal, Kenner, Marx, Mattel, and Milton Bradley.
That second index is more useful than it may appear. Childhood memories tend to preserve the look or mechanism of a toy better than the corporate label on its box. A toy collector who knows the maker can reach it from one direction; a visitor who remembers only a strange name can come from the other.
Some pages link scans of original instructions and manuals. In the Aqua Diver entry, the appeal is the specific object, not a generic “classic toys” product advertisement. Across the collection, science kits, casting machines, electronic games, marble mazes, banks, and novelty devices share shelf space.
A collector's room became a public reference
The site now mentions auction listings and affiliate links, but its center of gravity remains the privately built catalog, not a modern marketplace. There are still guestbook-style toy stories and a wish list, both reminders that the project began as a way to show friends and strangers what Cancilla had found.
The photographs and descriptions do more than evoke nostalgia. They preserve commercial designs and play mechanics that were often documented only on boxes or disposable instruction sheets.
A large institution might organize a toy exhibition around famous brands. Sam's Toybox gives the awkward, forgotten contraption a fair chance to be remembered too.
