# Ancient Web: Refdesk Built a Human Index for the Chaotic 1995 Internet Bob Drudge founded Refdesk in June 1995 as a carefully categorized reference directory; it survived as a human-edited gateway to news, dictionaries and web research. 2026-10-11 :: Switchboard Tech Services ![Ancient Web: Refdesk Built a Human Index for the Chaotic 1995 Internet](https://switchboardtechservices.com/static/images/defaults/articles.webp) Part of the [Ancient Web Collection](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/ancient-web-collection/). Search engines make the Web feel as if every fact has its own address. In **June 1995**, Bob Drudge saw something else: a library whose books were scattered across the floor. His solution was to build a reference desk. [Visit Refdesk](https://refdesk.com/). Refdesk organizes links to **dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers, government resources, calculators, calendars, maps, weather and factual reference sites**. The large homepage still divides these subjects into labeled sections and drop-down indexes. It is navigated by human-made categories rather than personalized recommendations. The [founder's page](https://www.refdesk.com/founder.html) tells the origin story. Drudge was a family therapist and social worker, raised by a librarian. He says he enjoyed sorting information and began Refdesk to bring order to the Internet. His son was **Matt Drudge**, whose own online news venture took a rather different editorial direction. ## Not a search engine, but a librarian's map Refdesk's [mission statement](https://www.refdesk.com/mission.html) gives three ambitions: fast access, easy navigation and comprehensive organization. It distinguishes quick factual answers from deeper reading through indexes such as **Fast Facts**, **Quick Reference**, **Facts Subject Index** and a multivolume **Facts Encyclopedia**. The site's preserved historical press clippings provide independent corroboration for its early reach. A [February 2001 New York Times report](https://www.refdesk.com/nyt.html) described a directory of more than **20,000 links on about 500 pages**. It also quoted then-secretary of state **Colin Powell** describing Refdesk as a favorite information source. Those are historical claims, not counts of today's functioning links. A [2001 newspaper profile](https://www.refdesk.com/newsday.html) discusses users sending questions to an Ask Bob feature; the journalist described thousands of inquiries answered in six months. That personal service was as much part of Refdesk's identity as its links. Drudge retired in **January 2017**, passing Refdesk to longtime collaborator **Margaret Otto**. The homepage retains traces of older browsers, including references to Internet Explorer, alongside links that have changed or disappeared. Its current external resources should be checked individually. Refdesk survives as a distinctive expression of the early Web's promise: one librarian-minded person helping strangers find reliable information without insisting that everything live on his own website.
