Long before an indie game came with a storefront trailer, *Ray's Maze* invited Macintosh owners into a network of strange rooms, monsters, traps, and puzzles—and then asked them to work out what on earth to do next.

Ray Dunakin created the adventures, while Marc Khadpe maintained this online collection of descriptions and downloads. The page credits the original games as Macintosh shareware and lists a copyright range of **1996–2015** for the website itself.

## A four-game shelf with original requirements

The earliest entry, *Ray's Maze* (1990), promises the Land of Infernos, the Butthead Trolls of Posteria, and a wandering minstrel. Its sequel *Another Fine Mess* (1992) sends players through eerie moors, a desolate battlefield, and a castle.

*A Mess O' Trouble* (1994) expands the adventures to a ghost town, a tropical island, and a cursed queen. *Twisted!* (1997) ventures into a satirical Land of Ooz. The description calls it a separate adventure by the same author, while identifying *A Mess O' Trouble* as the last of the original Ray's Maze sequence.

The page does more than name the games. It offers downloads of the old shareware versions and even the option of black-and-white or color versions of *Twisted!*. For the color release it specifies System 7.5 or later, a 68030, 68040 or PowerPC processor, 6 MB of free RAM and 26 MB of disk space.

## Preserving a game also means preserving its environment

A 2015 notice announces a newer Mac App Store version of *A Mess O' Trouble*. That update does not erase the old releases; the original download links remain listed with an explicit warning that a compatible vintage Mac or emulator is needed.

The site also points to **World Builder**, the classic Mac development program Dunakin used to construct his games. That is an unusually useful preservation detail. A game file alone tells less of the story than the tools and platform for which it was written.

I reviewed the surviving descriptions and download listings, not the execution of each binary. Their operation on today's computers is a separate technical question.

The Ray's Maze Page is a small, practical model for game preservation: keep the author's name, release years, system requirements, original files and odd little story premises together.
