Ancient Web: Orwell.ru Kept a Bilingual Literary Library Since 1999

Dag's Orwell Project began in March 1999 and organized English and Russian references to Orwell's novels, essays, photographs, bibliography, and biography.

A person looking for one George Orwell novel might reach Orwell.ru and discover a far bigger body of writing. Its index makes room for journalism, literary criticism, political essays, travel writing, biography, and photographs alongside the famous fiction.

Visit Dag's Orwell Project.

The homepage presents Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair, through links to Nineteen Eighty-Four, Animal Farm, Homage to Catalonia, The Road to Wigan Pier, and several other books. A second list includes essays such as Why I Write, Politics and the English Language, Shooting an Elephant, Notes on Nationalism, and Marrakech.

The project identifies itself as Dag's Orwell Project and says its library encompasses major writings in both English and Russian. That bilingual structure is more interesting than an ordinary list of public literary titles. It tries to make one writer's work available to readers in two languages without confining attention to the best-known novels.

A 1999 homepage with an unusually broad reading list

Near the bottom is an explicit creation date: March 24, 1999. The footer credits O. Dag and includes a copyright range extending to 2026. The same small navigation menu links a biography, library, critical writing about Orwell, photographs, a bibliography, and a site map.

The homepage also points readers toward Aldous Huxley and Yevgeny Zamyatin, making it possible to place Orwell's imagined futures next to other works in the literary tradition. A section on the author's life references Bernard Crick's biographical work and photographs from different parts of Orwell's career.

This is personal library-making in the format of the older Web. The reader follows subject headings rather than a personalized feed. The maintainer offers an email contact and invites suggestions about material that the collection has not yet included.

Not every internal page was available through the reader used for this review. That limitation means the site's homepage can establish the intended breadth of the project, but not prove that every linked text remains accessible today. Nor does the presence of a text on a website settle its reproduction rights.

The historical interest lies in the carefully organized ambition: one maintainer using a personal domain to give a twentieth-century author's varied work a bilingual home.
