Ancient Web: Monty Python's Completely Useless Web Site Has Been Useful Since 1996
Created in February 1996, Monty Python's Completely Useless Web Site is an unauthorized fan archive packed with scripts, episode material, images, sounds, video clips, album information, and artifacts from early fandom on the web.
Part of the Ancient Web Collection.
A website calling itself completely useless is under no obligation to remain useful for thirty years, yet here we are.
Visit Monty Python's Completely Useless Web Site
Adam Fogg created the unauthorized fan site on February 18, 1996. It still announces itself with the same basic premise: organize a ridiculous amount of Monty Python material so visitors can find exactly the ridiculous thing they came for.
The archive covers Monty Python's Flying Circus, Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, albums, books, live material and related miscellany. There are scripts, episode guides, pictures, old audio files and video clips in formats that practically smell like a beige desktop computer.
The file lists are a time capsule by themselves: WAV files, MIDI, AVI clips, JPEG galleries and text transcripts measured in kilobytes.
Before fandom became somebody else's platform
The useful thing about old fan sites is not just what they collected. It is how independently they organized it.
A page for Holy Grail can lead to still images, sound clips, complete scripts and individual scenes without asking a social platform what should appear next. The archive's structure reflects a fan's mental model of the subject rather than an engagement algorithm.
There is also a preservation lesson buried in the silliness. Some of these files were passed around the early web precisely because bandwidth was scarce. Short audio clips and tiny AVI files made culture portable long before streaming made everything instantly available and much harder to own locally.
The site has outlived several generations of browsers, media players and fan communities while still remaining recognizable as a 1990s web project.
Completely useless? Not really. It is a surviving specimen of what organized internet fandom looked like before the platforms swallowed most of it.
