If a traveler changes the past, what happens to the future that sent them? Mark Joseph Young spent years watching films that dodged that question, then made a website dedicated to asking it.

[Visit Temporal Anomalies in Popular Time Travel Movies](https://www.mjyoung.net/time/).

Young traces the site's beginning to 1997 in an [interview about his later book](https://dimensionfold.com/author-interview-mark-joseph-young-on-time-travel/). Its earliest film analyses tackled *The Terminator* and the three *Back to the Future* installments. The surviving index now spans a much wider collection, from *12 Monkeys* and *Frequency* to *Primer*, *Looper*, and lesser-known science-fiction stories.

The project is not a film-rating service. Young wants to know whether a story's events can be reconciled with a model of how changes to history might work.

## Every movie opens another paradox

The [film index](https://www.mjyoung.net/time/) lists individual essays beside discussion pages, addenda, and theory primers. Separate entries address fixed timelines, branching dimensions, and replacement models in which the past is altered and a different future results.

One [theory overview](https://www.mjyoung.net/time/theory101.html) reproduces a nineteen-part series originally written for another publication. The site also preserves reader correspondence in which visitors propose contradictory scenarios, question a particular movie interpretation, or try to resolve an apparent paradox.

Young describes how the essays changed over time. Early film studies appeared as single long pieces; during a period writing for *The Examiner*, later analyses were broken into shorter installments. The site subsequently gathered them back into an interconnected archive.

A [reflection on the older analyses](https://www.mjyoung.net/time/classics.html) says many early essays went online in late 1997. Young also explains why he has not simply rewritten them to match his later understanding: earlier VHS tapes and rental copies are no longer readily available.

The original site previously lived on GeoCities, and a [surviving forwarding page](https://www.oocities.org/area51/rampart/6040/) explains its move after Yahoo took over that service. This is an unusually visible hosting history for a fan scholarship project.

Young's models are methods for evaluating fictional scenarios, not established physics of real backward time travel. The achievement is the durable hypertext conversation: movies, theory, and reader objections all filing into the same archive.
