Ancient Web: KonTek Kept a Network of Video Game Fansites Online
The Konfiskated Teknologies Network preserves a late-1990s collection of specialist game fansites and a remarkable indexed backup of vanished GameSpy-hosted pages.

Long before a fandom could live entirely inside a social-media group, it often lived on an individual website dedicated to one game, with its own screenshots, sprite art, cheats, and fans.

KonTek.Net is a hub for those separate creations. Its front page links to The Contra Headquarters, Double Dragon Dojo, The Ghoul Realm, David Wonn's Video Game Glitches, The Light Sword Cypher Mainframe, West Mansion, The Mushroom Kingdom, and many more. The footer credits Konfiskated Teknologies from 1996 onward. One surviving science-and-computing page records an operational date of April 20, 1999.
The directory is organized less like a conventional news portal than an alliance of people with different specialties. A fan studying Splatterhouse might want a very different reference shelf from someone investigating old Contra games or Nintendo glitches.
A backup of an entire hosting era
The IGN and GameSpy Hosted Sites Archive is the most revealing feature. Its plain directory listing contains about a hundred named snapshots of old websites from ClassicGaming, PlanetUnreal, RPGPlanet, StrategyPlanet, SportPlanet, and other hosted communities. Directory entries carry timestamps from November 29, 2009; those timestamps document the archive structure, not the original founding year of every site.
There are pages about Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, StarTropics, Vectrex, Rise of the Triad, The Secret of Mana, and many less obvious subjects. A preserved Tecmo Rose Bowl page explains how one fan adapted a Tecmo Super Bowl modification into a college-football project beginning in 1999.
That sort of note is easy to lose. Once the original host changes ownership or shuts down, the amateur development history vanishes along with the screenshots and small download links.
The main network also retains an unusual mixture of external projects, member pages, computer-development resources, and music sites. It never presents every destination as the work of one corporation. It is explicitly a collection of sites made by enthusiasts.
Some copies are frozen and some links still lead outward to independent domains; preservation does not mean every download or embedded image is guaranteed to work.
KonTek's strength is that it remembers individual fansites as individual places, rather than compressing a generation of game culture into a list of titles.
