Ancient Web: Hyde Park 1970 Survived as a Wet Afternoon’s Eyewitness Archive

The UK Rock Festival Archive's September 12, 1970 Hyde Park page combines set lists, photographs, period reporting, and personal recollections of a rainy free concert.

Some concert histories remember the headliners. This one remembers the rain, the torn trousers, the person lending shelter beneath plastic sheeting, and how a band sounded days after losing a member.

The event featured Canned Heat, Eric Burdon and War, John Sebastian, Michael Chapman, Stoneground, and other performers. The UK Rock Festival Archive has given it a dedicated page combining a lineup, audience photographs, contemporary reporting, and several personal recollections.

Memories do not line up perfectly

One contributor remembers the rain falling almost continuously. Another recalls the clouds clearing during John Sebastian's performance. A witness named Barry describes an acquaintance with the Hog Farm crowd and the warmth of Sebastian's set; another says Stoneground's performance stood out more than the rest.

These disagreements are a feature, not a flaw. Memories recorded decades later capture how different people experienced the same afternoon rather than offering a single official reconstruction.

The site includes an extended period concert report describing Eric Burdon's clothing mishap during his performance with War, the sodden crowd, and Canned Heat continuing after the recent death of guitarist and singer Alan Wilson. A separate firsthand contribution reflects on the emotional weight of that performance and a memory of Bob Hite referring to Wilson.

The page also admits what it does not have. The editors request photographs of Canned Heat at the event and state that they have found very little period imagery. That explicit gap is more useful than quietly pretending an archive is complete.

At the bottom, visitors can follow links to other Hyde Park concerts from 1968 through 1976, including earlier performances by Pink Floyd and later appearances by Queen. The archive is maintained as a larger community effort; another Ancient Web article covers that general project.

This page qualifies as a distinct subject because it preserves the specific event and the voices attached to it. None of the anecdotes should be treated as a perfect transcript of 1970. The combination of near-contemporary reporting and later recollections lets readers see the difference.

The historical accomplishment is small but substantial: one rain-soaked Saturday has an address where people can still add what they remember.
