Ancient Web: Hägar Dünor Kept a Bilingual Viking Comic Strip Shelf
CANNI's unofficial Hägar the Horrible fan site began in 1998 and still maintains French and English strip galleries, artist information, and vintage commercial curiosities.

If you wanted a thousand Hägar the Horrible comic strips in French, somebody decided in 1998 that the sensible approach was to make a website and keep adding them.
The unofficial fan site identifies its creator as CANNI and dates its French-language launch to June 16, 1998. The homepage advertises more than 1,000 French strips, with pages for the cartoon's characters, its creators Dik and Chris Browne, bibliography, galleries, downloads, and even a guestbook.
It has the patient architecture of a serious fan collection: lots of hand-organized categories, sets of strips numbered one after another, and a genuine interest in the material surrounding the central joke.
The French strip index separates black-and-white sequences, color sequences, and special material. It also links to the first two Hägar strips by Dik Browne. The page asks readers to send additional strips by email, a reminder that much early fan archiving was a collaboration between whoever owned a scanner and whoever knew HTML.
The Viking crosses the language barrier
The project's English counterpart, Hägar The Horrible, states that its own version began on March 9, 2003. It advertises over 8,900 English strips and offers a date-based calendar for browsing. As of September 2026, the English page still announced newly added strips; the French homepage listed an update in 2022.
One especially odd detour is the Hägar and Skol page. It preserves links to advertising videos featuring the comic Viking in 1980s Skol beer commercials, plus a French making-of item. This is the kind of peripheral pop-culture material that disappears when a franchise's history gets reduced to official character biographies.
The website also plainly acknowledges that the cartoons belong to King Features Syndicate. This is a fan-maintained collection, not an official syndicate archive, and the images' copyright has not magically changed because the HTML has survived.
What makes it ancient Web is partly the age, partly the obvious human involvement. Nobody needed to invent a feed for Hägar. An index, a calendar, a mailbox, and years of persistence were enough.
