Ancient Web: Dreamland Resort Has Watched Area 51 Since 1999

Joerg Arnu's Dreamland Resort began as an Area 51 field-research site in 1999 and still preserves decades of photographs, maps, discussion, and dated updates.

A road trip to a famous restricted air base is one thing. Maintaining an independently organized record of what can be observed around it for more than twenty-five years is another.

Dreamland Resort founder Joerg Arnu says he first visited the Nevada area near Groom Lake on December 26, 1998, after reading conflicting accounts online. In an introduction written in October 1999, he describes the surveillance vehicles, warning signs, and questions that made him want to return. He founded the website to let interested people share observations and information.

The resulting site combines firsthand photographs, reports about aircraft and infrastructure, historical documents, maps, and a long-running discussion forum. Some material concerns public information about military aviation; some sections explore contested claims and local mysteries. Those are presented as research questions and site contributors' accounts, not proof of extraordinary explanations.

Watching change from the hills

The photo index is especially impressive as a chronology. It links to panoramas from Freedom Ridge in 1995, White Sides in 1994, Tikaboo Peak in the early 2000s, and more recent vantage points. It also organizes historic images dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, and satellite pictures with dates attached.

The archive records mundane but revealing changes: new hangars, altered taxiways, construction around radar sites, and the appearance of additional structures. Many entries tell the reader where and when an observation was made, rather than offering only an image without context.

An older site-update archive preserves material from 1999, including references to contemporary news stories and site sections added during its first months. The newer material has been layered on top rather than erasing the original trail.

There is also a documented controversy. In a November 2022 statement, Arnu said federal agents searched his homes and seized material. That statement records his account of the event; the existence of a raid alone does not validate all the site's claims about the base.

The site's historical importance lies in the archive and its continuity. A personally maintained website has kept revisiting the same subject long enough for individual snapshots to become a record of changing facilities, changing rumors, and changing ways of doing amateur investigation online.
