Reading a geometry proof is one thing. Being able to grab a point in its diagram and move it while the rest of the construction follows is something else. In 1996, David E. Joyce was already building that experience for the browser.

[Visit Joyce's Euclid table of contents](https://mathcs.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/toc.html).

Joyce, a mathematician at Clark University, prepared an online version of all thirteen books of *Euclid's Elements*. The [contents page](https://mathcs.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/toc.html) divides the work into definitions, postulates, common notions, propositions, and explanatory guides. It covers elementary geometry, proportions, number theory, solids, and the famous final constructions of regular polyhedra.

His [explanation of the text](https://mathcs.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/aboutText.html) credits Thomas Heath's translation and the Greek edition prepared by J. L. Heiberg, while noting adjustments intended to improve readability.

## Proofs that responded to the mouse

The [original Geometry Applet instructions](https://mathcs.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/usingApplet.html) explain a wonderfully ambitious interface. Red points could be moved freely, orange points were constrained to a line or circle, and green pivot points could rotate or resize a figure. Pressing a key restored the starting configuration.

The [Book I page](https://mathcs.clarku.edu/~djoyce/elements/bookI/bookI.html) begins with Euclid's definitions and five postulates, then lists 48 propositions, including the construction of an equilateral triangle and elementary properties of parallel lines. Every proposition is a route into another carefully organized page.

The original interactive features depended on Java running inside a browser, a technology modern browsers generally no longer support. A [new preservation project](https://www.euclids-elements.org/geomlib/) documents a TypeScript port of Joyce's Geometry Applet, published with his permission in 2026, allowing the same underlying idea to operate without an old browser plugin. That is a later adaptation, not evidence that the 1996 applet still executes unchanged.

Joyce's project is a valuable reminder that experimental educational software did not begin with contemporary learning platforms. A university-hosted personal website once delivered an entire mathematical classic and a manipulable geometry laboratory through linked HTML pages.
