Ancient Web: Chao Garden Left a 2002 Goodbye to Sonic Fans

A rescued GeoCities Sonic Adventure fansite preserves Chao-raising links, secret-garden navigation, an old guestbook, and its creator's candid final update from November 2002.

Most abandoned fansites simply stop updating. One Sonic fansite left an unusually candid note explaining why its owner was walking away.

Visit the preserved Chao Garden.

The page introduces itself as a Chao fansite for Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. Chao are the small virtual creatures players can raise within those games, and the webmaster designed a little garden of links around them. Picture-based navigation leads toward Chao information, site facts, a secret hidden garden, a guestbook, and an updates page.

The strongest surviving document is the homepage itself. Its final entry, dated November 30, 2002, says the webmaster had moved away from New York a couple of months earlier and no longer felt able to focus on the game. Visitors are asked not to add new guestbook requests and to email only about important matters.

A homepage allowed to grow up with its maker

That goodbye gives the site a rare sense of time. The Web was full of fan directories that looked permanent while they were being built. In practice, the people behind them changed schools, homes, jobs and interests. A game that deserved all their attention one year could lose its place the next.

At the bottom, beneath a considerable stretch of empty space, the author hides another message for visitors who have bothered scrolling down. The page also identifies its original host as GeoCities and credits a webmaster using the email identity nintendofan00. The present copy is on Neocities, so the hosting address is part of the preservation story rather than evidence of an uninterrupted GeoCities account.

Several internal pages, including the old update log and the hidden-garden link, did not load reliably during this review. Their navigation labels survive, but their contents should not be reconstructed from guesswork. There is no evidence here to establish the site's audience size or the fate of its original guestbook.

This little archive needs no grand claim of influence. A Chao information page and a farewell written in 2002 are enough to document one young fan's contribution to the Internet, complete with the point when the fan decided to move on.
