Ancient Web: Astral Traveler Mapped One Man’s Inner Universe in 1999
Danyel Seagan's Astral Traveler combines artwork, essays on consciousness, spirituality, politics and healing in an image-heavy personal website founded in April 1999.

Astral Traveler does not really look like a website trying to sell visitors a single idea. It looks like somebody building an entire landscape in which his ideas could live.
The homepage credits Danyel Seagan and says the project has been online since April 1999. Images occupy nearly every row of its old-fashioned table layout, surrounding a quotation from mythologist Joseph Campbell about finding a story big enough for the planet. A text menu leads into sections called 'Impressions,' 'Realities,' 'Aurora Paradox,' 'Healing,' 'Fingerprints,' and 'Liquid Mind.'
The arrangement is revealing. These are not categories optimized for searching the Web. They are names chosen by an individual author for different parts of a continuing intellectual project. The homepage also includes a site index, contact details, links and a page explaining the project, making it possible to approach the collection without having to decipher every decorative image.
An archive of ideas rather than a single doctrine
The site's essay on democracy shows how varied its material can be. Seagan considers compromises within political systems and links to speeches by journalist Bill Moyers from 2004 and 2005. On that page, the discussion of civic life is integrated into a website whose other headings emphasize consciousness, perception and healing.
It would be a mistake to infer from the site's name that it provides empirical proof of out-of-body travel or unusual healing phenomena. Its esoteric language is the author's worldview, not verified science. The point of preserving it is to show the editorial freedom of a personal project that was not forced to fit a mainstream magazine's subject boundaries.
There are distinct period traces: table-based image navigation, a Safe Surf rating logo, links to downloadable PDF lectures, and later notices about a mobile application. It is an old homepage that accumulated additions rather than vanishing when the next publishing platform arrived.
The site tells us what one web author wanted to connect across subjects. In the 1990s that was reason enough to create a domain.
