# Can an AI Assistant Still Work When Your Internet Connection Goes Down?

A local AI assistant can keep chatting, processing local documents and serving a local API during an internet outage if the required model and runtime files are already installed and every dependency stays local.

A local AI assistant can keep working when the internet goes down, but only if the **whole workflow** is local.

Installing one model locally does not guarantee that every feature around it will survive an outage.

## What can keep working

LM Studio currently documents that, once the required model and runtime files are already present, its core local functions can work without internet access.

That includes:

- chatting with a downloaded model;
- local document chat and RAG;
- running a local server/API.

The same general principle applies to other genuinely local runtimes: if the model, runtime and requested data all stay on the machine, an internet outage does not remove the basic inference path.

## What must already be downloaded

Before the outage, you need:

- the runtime itself;
- the model files;
- any required runtime components;
- local documents you plan to use;
- any local embedding or retrieval models the workflow depends on.

Model search and downloads require connectivity unless you transfer the files from another system.

If the application needs to fetch a missing runtime or model after the connection is already down, that part will fail.

## What stops working

A local assistant can still depend on outside services.

Features that may disappear during an outage include:

- web search;
- cloud-model fallback;
- remote APIs;
- remote MCP servers or tools;
- online databases;
- cloud-synced files that were never downloaded locally;
- app or model updates.

The assistant may continue generating text while losing the features that gave it current information.

## Offline does not mean current

A downloaded model does not automatically know what happened today.

Without a web connection or another current local data source, it can only use:

- what was learned during training;
- the prompt;
- local files or databases you provide.

That makes offline AI useful for drafting, summarizing local files, coding help and many other tasks, but not a substitute for live web data.

## Test the exact workflow

The best readiness test is simple:

1. download the model and required components;
2. open the documents or tools you expect to use;
3. disconnect external internet access;
4. restart the local AI application;
5. repeat the real task.

Test document chat, local API calls and any integrations separately.

If one part stops working, you have found an external dependency.

## Internet outage is different from power outage

A local AI workstation still needs electrical power.

If the ISP goes down but the computer and local network remain powered, a local assistant may continue normally.

If the power goes out too, battery/runtime planning becomes a separate problem.

See [What Still Works When the Internet Goes Down in Kirksville?](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/what-works-internet-down-kirksville/) for the broader outage distinction.

For the basic architecture, see [Running an AI Assistant on Your Own Computer Instead of the Cloud](https://switchboardtechservices.com/articles/run-ai-assistant-own-computer/).

A useful offline AI setup is therefore something you **test before you need it**, not something you assume is offline because the model file happens to be local.
